GENERAL THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT COMPOSITION CLASSES
A composition is considered an original piece of music written and notated by the participant. Any instrumentation is acceptable. The notation must be in standard notation or a type of notation that exists within the spirit of the varied idioms typical of composition. As a general guideline, no more than 10% of the composition should be improvised, if the composition includes a portion of live improvisation. Charts are not considered a suitable form of notation for this particular class (please ask Heidi about the singer-songwriter class and how it differs from the composition class if you are composing original songs in a popular idiom). Participants should register for this class once per composition they wish to submit. If they wish to submit more than one composition, they must register for the class more than once, according to the number of compositions they would like to submit. If you and your music teacher are unsure about which classes to register for or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the coordinator (Heidi - firstname.lastname@example.org) in advance to registering.
CLASS SIZE & AGE DELINEATION BY ENROLMENT
When you register for a class, you will be asked to declare the participant’s age (their age is calculated according to how old they were on December 31st of the year prior to the festival year). After registration closes, the festival schedule’s construction begins. Schedule protocol is that no class will exceed eight participants or ninety minutes in length. In situations where there are more than eight participants registered for a class or a class exceeds ninety minutes in length, participants will be separated according to their age group and then sorted randomly into classes of eight or fewer participants.
PRICE OF CLASSES
Classes are priced according to the participant’s age group in the following manner: 7 & Under ($30.00/class) / 8-9 Years ($30.00/class) / 10-11 Years ($33.00/class) / 12-13 Years ($33.00/class) / 14-15 Years ($36.00/class) / 16-17 Years ($36.00/class) / 18-28 Years ($36.00/class).
Participants must email a PDF of their composition (hand written or computer generated) as well as an audio file in MP3 or WAV format to email@example.com by March 31st of the year of the festival. Please mark this deadline on your calendars as soon as you have completed your registration.
The submitted recording of each composition will be played before the adjudicator follows standard festival procedure, offering their adjudication and awarding ribbons, marks and seals of standard.
