KW Community Orchestra Concerto Competition

The KWCO Concerto Competition offers students the exciting opportunity to play in concert with the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Orchestra.  Three (3) Winners, and two (2) Alternates will be chosen from this class to perform their Concerto on Saturday June 3rd, 2023.  The winners will also receive two (2) complimentary concert tickets.

Each year the Concerto Competition will be available to different instruments groups.  For the 2023 KWKMF it is open to Piano students, and the following year it will be open to Strings & Winds (subject to change at the discretion of KWCO).

Eligibility, Rules & Regulations:

  • Piano players ages 12-18 as of December 31st, 2022, are eligible to enter.  Exception: Previous KWCO Concerto Competition winners are not permitted to enter.

  • Entry fee: $36.  Registration is included in the “Piano: Concerto” Discipline in MFS

  • Concertos must be performed with live piano accompaniment, participants must provide their own accompanist

  • Participants must perform one (1) movement of a Piano Concerto

  • The score must be available on IMSLP.org (International Music Score Library Project).

  • Potential winners must be available for rehearsals and the KWCO Concert on the following dates:

    • Rehearsal: Tuesday May 30th and/or May 30th  from 7:30-9:00pm

    • Dress Rehearsal: Saturday June 3rd, 2023 from 9:30am to 12:00pm

    • Concert: Saturday June 3rd, 2023 from 7:30-9:30pm

  • Winners are expected to dress in appropriate concert attire for the performance

  • The KW Community Orchestra has final approval over repertoire selections.
